Draney wins Fox Cities half-marathon’s competitive-walker division
Congratulations to Prof. Mike Draney of Natural and Applied Sciences, who won the competitive 13.1 mile Race Walk at the Fox Cities Marathon on Sunday. It was his third win in the competition, having finished first previously in 2009 and 2011. His course record of 1:54:07 was more than 20 minutes faster than his nearest competitor. Draney confides that he knew he was trailing that competitor at the first mile marker… spent the rest of the day in overdrive, trying to catch up… and failed to notice that, somewhere along the way, he had already passed him. “Good thing I didn’t realize I had passed him, because it made me go as fast as I could.”
