Still ‘Searching’: Sutton’s original musical makes New York pro festival stage

As we told you here recently, Associate Prof. Brian Sutton is back in the Big Apple, where five performances of his original musical, “Searching for Romeo” will be staged next month (July 8-13) as part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival. We’ve got a new feature on Sutton’s path to 42nd Street, which started with a road-trip inspiration and is continuing as he prepares for a full festival production of his play (as Log readers may recall, “Romeo” was done as a staged reading during last year’s NYMTF). Known as the “Sundance of musical theatre,” the festival has seen three of its shows open on Broadway and 24 make it to off-Broadway. The productions have racked up numerous nominations and awards, including a Pulitzer Prize for drama and three Tonys. “Searching for Romeo” received a write-up on the Broadway World website Friday (June 13), in a preview that talks plot and shares info on cast and crew. Observant Log readers will note that despite the title and first paragraph of the piece, the festival won’t mark SFR’s world premiere (which happened two years ago on our beautiful campus).
