Lawton Gallery has opening reception for ‘ZAM’ on Thursday, Oct. 10
The opening reception for the next exhibit at the Lawton Gallery, ZAM, will be held on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The event begins with an artist talk by Oskar Ly, a Minnesota based artist, followed by the opening reception of the artist’s show, ZAM. Food and beverages will also be provided at the opening reception.
ZAM is an exhibition presenting select works and collections by Hmong French American artist Oskar Ly. Due to persecution and genocide of its people, language, and culture, Hmong people do not have a known word for “art” to convey an umbrella all-encompassing term across the many disciplines. Despite this, Hmong art and creativity has been embedded in the many aspects of Hmong life and culture, making it a significant way of life. Oskar Ly’s work has contributed to the Hmong American fashion movement and communities by embracing Hmong identity and exploring cultural narratives through conceptual and wearable art pieces.
