Wojta and the WNBA Draft: No. 18 to Minnesota Lynx

Julie Wojta, the pride of UW-Green Bay, was drafted in the second round of today’s WNBA Draft, going No. 18 overall to the defending champion Minnesota Lynx. Wojta was one of 15 players invited to Bristol, Conn., the home of ESPN, for the annual women’s player draft. Wojta became Green Bay’s highest pick ever by an NBA or WNBA team. (Phoenix men’s star and current Virginia head coach Tony Bennett went 35th overall — in the second round — to the Charlotte Hornets in 1992. He played three NBA seasons before foot injuries ended his career.) Analysts said immediately that Minnesota is so rich in returning talent — returning stars include Maya Moore, Simone Augustus, Lindsay Whalen and the Lynx had several high draft choices — that some of this year’s newcomers could be trade material.
