‘Torture’ at the Philosophers’ Café, Thursday night
The next monthly meeting of the Philosophers’ Cafe is 7 to 8:30 p.m. this Thursday (Feb. 10) at Kavarna coffeehouse located on Broadway in downtown Green Bay. What exactly is torture? Why is it morally wrong? Should we ever torture? Prof. Derek Jeffreys of Humanistic Studies and Religious Studies, and author of a book on the subject, will lead discussion. Difficulties in defining “torture,” along with the question of whether harsh interrogation practices are reliably effective, are likely to come up. Prof. Chris Martin of Humanistic Studies says the Philosophers’ Café, organized in conjunction with colleagues at St. Norbert College, is a free and open public discussion with the only prerequisites a sense of curiosity about the world and a willingness to discuss it with others.
