The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s popular After Thoughts series of programs for women will explore 19th century France and the consumer and modern marketplace during its next event Nov. 1.

Susan Frost, UW-Green Bay associate lecturer in Humanistic Studies and the president of Frost Marketing Communications, Inc., will be the featured speaker for the event, which begins at 5 p.m. at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts on campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive. Guests will enjoy hors d’oeuvres and networking until 5:45 p.m., when the lecture begins. The event will conclude at 7 p.m.

Titled “The Lust to Shop: From Romanticism to Modernism in a Shoe Box,” Frost’s address will explore the collision of worlds between the passionate Gustav Flaubert and the analytical Emile Zola, and what they can tell us about desire and the modern marketplace, as well as ourselves in the 21st century. The discussion will center on Flaubert’s famously controversial Madame Bovary and Zola’s 1883 novel, Au Bonheur des Dames (or, The Ladies’ Paradise).

Designed to connect women in the community with UW-Green Bay, After Thoughts gatherings showcase UW-Green Bay faculty and staff and convene women after their workdays for learning, enrichment and fun. The sessions provide “After Thoughts” for participants to take with them when they leave.

The 2011-12 season of After Thoughts got off to a successful start Sept. 20, when UW-Green Bay Prof. Kim Nielsen, History and Women’s and Gender Studies, presented “Jane Addams and the Challenge of a Living Democracy.” On March 13, 2012, UW-Green Bay alumna and president and publisher of The Des Moines Register Laura Hollingsworth will present the first talk of the spring semester. The final After Thoughts event of 2011-12 will feature UW-Green Bay Theatre Prof. Laura Riddle in an April 10, 2012 presentation.

After Thoughts programming began during spring semester 2011, when two pilot sessions were held. The first, presented in March, featured UW-Green Bay Associate Prof. Amy Wolf, Ecology, who spoke on “The Beauty of Bees and Their Impact on Our Lives.” The second, held April 5, was a presentation titled “In the Face of Disaster, How Resilient is Our Community?” from Lucy Arendt, associate professor of Business Administration. After Thoughts’ major sponsor is Billie Kress.

Each After Thoughts event begins with time to network, mingle and enjoy hors d’oeuvres before the featured speaker begins. Seating is limited, so advance registration is recommended. The cost of each program is $12, and attendees are invited to register for each event individually or all remaining events at once.
