UW-Green Bay’s Lawton Gallery to feature contemporary Native art exhibit

The Lawton Gallery at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will feature a new exhibit of works by Native artists from Thursday, Oct. 7 to Thursday, Nov. 4.

The exhibit, “Mostly Indian and Other Fables,” includes contemporary works by 24 Native artists from the United States and Canada. The works celebrate the ways Native artists are working with old and new traditions to create works that speak to the present, the past and the future.

Artists in the exhibition include: Monisha Alleck, Donald Carufel, Gordon Coons, Yvette Diltz, Peggy Fontenot, Martha Gradolf, Isaac Thomas, John Joe, Tom Jones, Douglas K. Limón, James Luna, Lewis Mohawk, Corinne Nanauq McDonnell, Peter Morin, Nieves, Chris Pappan, Jeremy Singer, Cameron Ayn Smith, Phillis Spencer-Belz, Flossie Iqilan Spencer, Ukjese van Kampen, Josh Van Stippen, Jeff Veregge, Debra Yepa-Pappan and Phil Young.

Pappan, one of the Native artists featured in the exhibit, will give a lecture on campus Monday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m. in the Christie Theatre in the University Union. The lecture is titled, “The Lowbrow Native American Art of Chris Pappan.”

Stephen Perkins, the curator of art at the Lawton Gallery, and UW-Green Bay graduate Amii John are co-curators of the exhibit.

Sponsors of the exhibit include: the Oneida Nation Arts Program, Wisconsin Arts Board and the UW-Green Bay American Intercultural Center.

The opening reception will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, with a talk by the curators and Danielle Tousey Schmidt, a contributor to the exhibition brochure, at 5 p.m.

Perkins and John will be holding tours and talks from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 20, 27 and Nov. 3.

The Lawton Gallery is located inside Theatre Hall on the UW-Green Bay campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive. All of the events are free and open to the public.
