Longtime University of Wisconsin-Green Bay faculty member Denise Scheberle has been recognized as the 2012 national teacher of the year by the American Political Science Association.

Scheberle will receive the Distinguished Teaching Award at the association’s annual conference later this year in New Orleans. The awards luncheon is Thursday, Aug. 30.

Adding to the distinction is the fact that Scheberle will receive the inaugural award. The award was established to honor outstanding contributions to undergraduate and graduate teaching of political science at two- and four-year institutions.

“This is a richly deserved honor for Professor Scheberle, and a great source of pride for the University,” commented UW-Green Bay Chancellor Thomas K. Harden. “Our identity as an institution centers on award-winning teaching by exceptional faculty members. We are delighted that Denise’s career achievements have been recognized at the national level.”

The American Political Science Association, founded in 1903, is the leading professional organization for the study of political science and serves more than 15,000 members in more than 80 countries. The award selection committee was made up of distinguished scholars Kay Lehman Schlozman, Boston College; Juan Carlos Huerta, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christie; and Anita J. Isaacs, Haverford College (Pa.).

Teaching awards are nothing new for Scheberle. The UW System Board of Regents honored her as UW System teacher of the year in 2004. She is a two-time recipient of the UW-Green Bay Founders Association Award for Excellence, once for teaching (1998) and once for community outreach (2010).

Scheberle joined UW-Green Bay and the Public and Environmental Affairs academic unit in 1992. She has taught courses in public and nonprofit management, American government, public administration and environmental law. She helped develop a UW-Green Bay Teaching Scholars program for new faculty members, an annual on-campus teaching conference and a yearly Academic Excellence Symposium to spotlight student achievement.

Scheberle stepped back from full-time classroom teaching in 2011 and was awarded professor emerita status by the University. Her most recent assignments involved a limited number of online courses for her department and for the UW-Green Bay Adult Degree Program.
