Historical actor to portray famous lawyer at UW-Green Bay

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will hold a special program about one of the most famous lawyers in American history.

Gary Anderson will portray attorney Clarence Darrow in the program titled “Clarence Darrow’s Search for Justice” on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. in University Theatre at Theatre Hall, 2420 Nicolet Drive. The program is free and open to the public.

Darrow is perhaps best known for his role in the “Scopes Monkey Trial.” The 1925 case involved whether the theory of evolution could be taught in public schools in Tennessee. Darrow was also known for defending teenage thrill killers Leopold and Loeb in 1924.

Anderson, a nationally renowned and award-winning stage actor, is the chief executive officer of the Clarence Darrow Foundation. According to its website, the non-profit organization is dedicated to preserving “the ideals of Mr. Darrow who defended the friendless and frightened of our society.”

The event is part of the 25th anniversary of The Historical Perspectives Lecture Series presented by the Center for History and Social Change, part of the academic program in Social Change and Development.
