Another ‘beautiful day in Green Bay’
Ultra runner Lisa Smith Batchen completed the Wisconsin leg of her cross-county run for orphans with a little help from UW-Green Bay friends and beautiful running weather on May 28. In a journal entry on her runhope.com website, she reports “We couldn’t have asked for a better day: Perfect temperature, lovely run along the lake (we know it as the bay) and great energy and enthusiasm from everyone!”
Read about Smith Batchen and her running partner, Sister Mary Beth Lloyd, (“The Running Nun”) and their record-setting quest at our previous post.
UW-Green Bay controller Kelly Franz and cross-country coach Mike Kline put on many miles themselves, sometimes running with Smith Batchen, and other times running to accommodate her crew and schedule. Wisconsin International School students were inspired to run a few miles with her as well. Cellcom Green Bay Marathon director Sean Ryan and a crew of volunteers helped with on-site management. Joe Simon, Simon Insurance & Investments Services, Inc., Green Bay, served as the local liaison to the runners and their team. Franz, Klein and Simon (white shirt, white hat) took time out for a few photos to commemorate the event.
