Fox 11: Beetle worries campus

The discovery of an emerald ash borer beetle in Green Bay has raised concerns at UW-Green Bay, where a wooded arboretum and golf course on campus have plenty of ash trees.

The beetle’s larvae destroys the trees by feasting on the inner bark, prohibiting the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients.

There are probably between 50 and 100 ash trees on the course, Shorewood Superintendent Nathan Rusch told Fox 11’s Lou Hillman.

Meanwhile, in the Cofrin Arboretum, “where our walking trails are, we have concentrations of ash as high as 80 percent,” in some areas, said Mike VanLanen, grounds supervisor.
