Remembering the late Bernie Starks, Founders Award winner

Bernard “Bernie” Starks, one of the most-recognized personalities at UW-Green Bay over its first two decades, died last Wednesday in De Pere at age 78. Starks taught for the Education program and chaired Physical Education Programs for 17 years. One of the first staff members hired to begin the new University in 1966, he retired from teaching in 1989 and managed the Shorewood Golf Course for an additional two years. In 1976 Starks became only the second recipient of the Founders Award for Excellence in Community Outreach (the first was Prof. Jack Day) and recognition as “one of our best goodwill ambassadors.” He had a prolific record of speaking engagements and workshops on physical education, health and fitness issues. He was deeply involved in community service including civil defense, the American Red Cross, the heart and epilepsy associations, and in CPR and EMT training. The U.S. Army veteran was also known widely as an official at both the interscholastic and intercollegiate levels. At his request there will be no formal funeral ceremonies. Details on condolences and memorial gifts (to the Phoenix Fund) may be found in the May 3 Press-Gazette; click here.
