Aldrete writes the book chapter on Rome riots

Award-winning historian Gregory Aldrete, professor of Humanistic Studies, has written a chapter for The Cambridge Companion to Ancient Rome, edited by Paul Erdkamp and newly published by Cambridge University Press. The volume offers 31 original essays by leading historians, classicists and archaeologist. It pays special attention to the lives lived by everyday citizens in the great metropolis, from the monuments and the games to the food and water supply, from policing and riots to domestic housing, from death and disease to pagan cults and the impact of Christianity. Aldrete’s chapter analyzes the 154 documented instances of riots in ancient Rome, their causes, frequency, who organized them, who participated in them, and the typical behaviors exhibited by rioters.
