UW-Green Bay offers Arts Enrichment for Adults summer program

Arts Enrichments for Adults, a noncredit program offered at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, is designed to help adults capture their creative side. A wide array of classes will be offered from 6-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, July 30 – Aug. 2, on the UW-Green Bay campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive.

Students can choose one class from the following course options:

Relief Woodcarving: Yes You Can!
Relief carving is like painting a picture with shadows. Discover this art form by creating a relief carving to celebrate Halloween, Christmas or the 4th of July. No previous wood carving experience is necessary. You will be amazed with the results and have fun while learning to carve.

Instructor: Cheryl Hackett is a recent retiree from both the U.S. Army and from teaching K-12 Art. She began her artistic career as an illustrator for the Army and has 24 years of experience as an art teacher. She currently teaches woodcarving through Northeast Wisconsin Technical College at Kewaunee High School. Hackett also is a partner in a vegetable and craft business, Farm Near the Falls, and sells her creations at farmers’ markets and craft shows. She looks forward to sharing her passion and 35 years of carving experience with her students. Materials Fee: $10 per student

Acrylic Painting for Everyone
This acrylic painting class is for everyone! All levels are welcomed into Jason Keller’s creative world, from beginners to experienced painters, realists and those who would like to experiment with abstraction. Beginning with the basics, you will learn about composition, color mixing, applying paint to the surface and various studio practices. Keller will introduce you to the work of highly respected artists while encouraging you to explore your own subject matter and style. Bring in ideas and images to use as references for the paintings you will create.

Instructor: Jason Keller graduated from UW-Green Bay in 2012 where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education with an emphasis in painting. For the past three years, Keller has had the pleasure of working as a ceramics class assistant during the University’s Summer Art Studio for middle and high school students. Keller’s work has been exhibited in both the 407 and Lawton galleries at UW-Green Bay, as well as the Rahr West Museum in Manitowoc. His work has received best in show and best painting awards at the Rahr West exhibit and was purchased for the UW-Green Bay Campus Art Collection. Materials Fee: $25

Sew What!!!
Learn a new skill or dust off your sewing skills lost in time! “Sew What” offers the supplies and tools necessary to stitch up your choice of many fun and practical projects. Think about creating a one-of-a-kind gift for friends, grandkids and yourself! Choose from options like little quilt fridge frame, draw-string backpack, a travel-size pillow and case, pillowcase to fit any size pillow, mini quilt and flannel infant blanket. Create one! Create many! Conversation with each participant prior to class will ensure projects perfect for your individual sewing level. Conversation and fun included. Newbies welcome.

Instructor: A Wisconsin native, quilt maker Janna Zimmerman grew up among a family of seamstresses, offering an easy path to her love of all things fabric! As an accomplished quilter, Zimmerman combines traditional quilt patterns and techniques with bright, vibrant colors to create a more contemporary, graphic style quilt perfect for today’s living and working spaces. Her quilted works are inspired by life around her, often designed so creations can be enjoyed in daily life. Teaching and pattern design keep her busy in her Green Bay studio, appropriately named WE QUILT! Materials Fee: $25

Ceramics: Wheel Throwing and Hand-building for Raku Firing
Some say it is their road to creativity. Others say it is their path to relaxation. Whatever your reason, professional potter and teacher, Dean Hoegger will guide you on your journey. Learn to touch the clay and shape it in ways that will satisfy both the novice and experienced potter. Techniques in wheel throwing and hand-building will be presented and used to create decorative vessels that will be fired by participants using the raku method. Glaze, fire and smoke will be used to create unique and dramatic glaze affects.

Instructor: Dean Hoegger studied ceramics and education at UWGB in the late 70’s and has been making pots and teaching ever since. He has taught weekly adult classes at The Barnsite Art Studio in Kewaunee, Clay on Steele in Algoma, and at his studio in Sturgeon Bay. He currently exhibits at The Flying Pig in Algoma and the Woodwalk Gallery in Egg Harbor. Materials Fee: $25

Anyone Can Draw!!!
Students will learn how to draw using a grid method. Students will practice creating a composition, experimenting with contour drawing and a variety of ways of creating a life-like, three-dimensional effect as they experiment with various ways of shading. When you complete this exciting and enjoyable drawing class you will have your very own masterpiece to take with you! Instructor Sara Tlachac will help attendees “learn to see” through a variety of exercises — and they’ll have lots of fun along the way.

Instructor: Sara Tlachac has been an artist and educator in Green Bay for the past 12 years. She has worked with a variety of students from first grade to adults and has had a blast doing everything from wildlife illustration to messing with pastels and figure drawing from life. “I always come back to my love of drawing in black and white,” Tlachac says. “The drawing process really excites me.” In her own work Tlachac focuses on the human form, creating plaster figures and paintings. Her work can be found in Door and Brown counties. If you have ever thought about trying to draw that special photo, or just haven’t drawn in years, this incredible instructor will help you work the kinks out of your fingers and get those drawings going again. No experience necessary! Materials Fee: $25

Book-Making: Uniquely Yours
In this course you will learn how to create your own book. The covers and pages will be created to feel just right as you hold them. Create a book of any size you like, with your choice of color and texture. Your book will be your book, as creative as you want it to be, to be used for whatever purpose.

Instructor: Kathy Hackbarth has been an art teacher in Green Bay for many years. Fifteen years ago, she started a small company, “Books That Bind.” She has been creating handmade books and journals ever since. Kathy teaches in several studios around Wisconsin and has offered her expertise for the UW-Green Bay Summer Art Studio, an art camp for the state’s middle and high school students.

Watercolor Inspirations
Watercolor Inspirations is a workshop designed for beginners and advanced students alike. This watercolor workshop will give you the encouragement you need to become a skilled and confident watercolor painter. Students will learn about the importance of using good tools, materials and supplies along with their proper care. Techniques such as color mixing and paint control will be taught along with how to enlarge sketches and masking out white areas and other technical skills. Creating dominance with hue, value and color intensity are the keys to understanding the beauty of watercolor painting. Workshop atmosphere will be fun and friendly with emphasis on your being proud of your final results. Paper and paint will be provided and other supplies will be shared.

Instructor: Jennifer Boudreau started her career as a grades K-8 art teacher in the Wisconsin Rapids Public School District. Emphasizing culture and art history were main themes in the annual art shows. During her summers, she taught introduction courses in watercolor and ceramics. When teaching adults, Boudreau believes it is important to find one’s true self and inner child creativity. Setting aside time for imagining is an essential part of higher-level learning. Boudreau lives with her family in De Pere. Materials Fee: $15

Beading Workshop
More than beads and wire, you will learn how to creatively design your own beaded art pieces. Whether you are a novice or experienced beader, glean from this experienced artist and instructor as you create your own incredible pieces of wearable art. Beading Kits include a wrapped bracelet, a wire-wrapped collage pendant, and a suede/vintaj pendant, all at an extra materials cost.

Instructor: Shelli Peters is an artist, crafter and entrepreneur. She and a friend own “Mother Bead,” a unique and charming shop that provides anything a beading heart could desire. Like many other artists and crafters, she has always made things with her hands. Being involved in the arts has been “the fun part” of her life, whether it was chairing Artfest in Minot, N.D., or in participating in art shows across the country. Prior to launching a career as an artist, Peters was a Registered Nurse working and teaching in several health care facilities across the U.S. This innovative jewelry artist’s work is featured in the Winter 2012 issue of La Bella Magazine in an article titled “Treasures of Time.”

The Arts Enrichment for Adults class fee of $129 covers instruction. Some classes requiring special materials also have a lab fee. Students choose one course that they will focus on during the four-day week.

Sandra Shackelford is the Arts Enrichment Coordinator for the program. Shackelford is a documentary artist whose work is in collections throughout the U.S. She earned a degree from UW-Green Bay and studied at UW-Milwaukee. Shackelford works with K-12 students at Aldo Leopold School and creates art programs for youth through the Howe Neighborhood Family Resource Center, both in Green Bay. She is the co-director for UWGB’s longstanding Summer Art Studio Camps. In addition, she is the founding director of the mosaic art project, “The Memorial Wall of Hope and Healing.”
