UW-Green Bay presents Grandparents’ University this summer

GREEN BAY — Grandparents and their grandchildren between the ages of seven and 14 can share their love of learning at the two-day Grandparents’ University summer camp at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

The event takes places July 30-31, and will allow grandparents and children to explore together a topic of interest and enjoy summer activities on the scenic bayshore campus at 2420 Nicolet Drive.

Grandparents’ University offers six courses from among four different “majors.”

Kids and their grandparents can get creative in two art courses. Sara Tlachac will lead students in the You Too Can Draw! class to create creatures of the wild with pencil, pastels and charcoal. Prof. Curt Heuer will show the fundamentals of ceramics in the class Memory-Making Clay Designs.

Dietician Karen Lacey will lead edible, hands-on experiments that will show participants how food can help our bodies and what happens to ingredients in food when they are mixed together. She’ll also show how foods are not only tasty, but can also be appealing to the eye.

New this year is Prof. Amanda Nelson, who will teach Exercise Physiology, an educational, kinetic and monitored workout experience. Students will explore the heart, body composition and how diet affects the body.

Participants can also learn about Green Bay’s natural biodiversity with walks through UW-Green Bay’s Cofrin Arboretum with Thomas Erdman, curator of the Richter Museum of Natural History. In the Richter Museum they’ll explore the fascinating collections and see how they are used for teaching, documentations of species distributions and environmental changes and quality. Students will also learn what a voucher specimen is and why they are so important, and will see how birds and other animals are used to detect toxins and their importance in cleaning up the Fox River, Green Bay and Lake Michigan.

Creating Your Family’s Web Page with Prof. Bill Shay is another option for students. Participants will learn the steps to creating a web page for the family. Using an “easy-to-use” web design software package, Prof. Shay will show how to write a web page, scan photos and how to set up links to additional pages.

Registration for Grandparents’ University continues through July 9 on a first-come, first-served basis.
Participants will meet at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 30, and the program ends at 2:30 p.m. Friday, July 31, following a graduation ceremony.

The fee for Grandparents’ University is $185 per adult and child pair. The fee includes instruction, activities, a cookout on Thursday night, parking and a T-shirt. Each additional adult is $125 and each additional child is $75.

Grandparents’ University attendees may commute or choose to stay in UW-Green Bay student suite apartments. The cost for on-campus lodging is a flat rate of $60 for a four-bedroom suite. Commuters and residents alike may purchase a meals package for $20 per person that includes Thursday and Friday lunches and Friday breakfast. Individual meal tickets may be purchased at check-in.
