Controversial review of teacher-education programs is getting cold reception

A controversial review of America’s teacher colleges has met resistance in Wisconsin, where education school leaders in the public and private sector say they will not voluntarily participate, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports. The National Council on Teacher Quality, a nonprofit advocacy group, and U.S. News & World Report, known for its annual rankings of colleges, announced in January they would launch a first-ever review of the nation’s roughly 1,400 colleges of education. Francine Tompkins, director of PK-16 initiatives for the UW System (and former UW-Green Bay faculty member), said the information was going to be presented in a way that wouldn’t serve the public. “It might be titillating, but there won’t be anything in there that will help the (education school) programs improve,” she said.
