UW-Green Bay hosts major science, tech symposium
More than a dozen state business leaders and technical experts, and up to 150 faculty and students visitors from around the state will join Gov. Jim Doyle and other elected officials for the third annual Wisconsin Science & Technology Symposium this Thursday and Friday (July 22 and 23) at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s University Union.
The event will bring together science and technology researchers, health care leaders and representatives from the public sector and industry to share ideas and spark new collaborations. The symposium also will showcase cutting-edge research from the UW System, Marshfield Clinic, Aurora BayCare Medical Center and industry in diverse fields including renewable energy, biomedical devices, therapeutics and polymers and composites.
Chancellor Thomas K. Harden will deliver the welcome. The opening session at 9 a.m. Thursday, open to the public, will also feature brief remarks by state Reps. Louis Molepske Jr. and Peter Barca, Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt, UW System Regent Mark Bradley, and WiSys Technology Foundation Managing Director Maliyakal John. UW-Green Bay Profs. John Katers and Michael Zorn of Natural and Applied Sciences will be among the featured presenters later in the symposium.
The governor’s visit is scheduled for Friday morning.
Additional highlights of the symposium include an entrepreneurship workshop focusing on university based high-tech business startups, and presentations by Wisconsin companies developing innovative products with UW campuses including Creative Culinary Solutions, Esker Technologies, Fused Innovation, Mensa Systems, NovaScan, Semba Biosciences, and VeriPure. The symposium offers an opportunity for companies to partner with UW faculty through WiSys funded programs.
The two-day event is being organized by UW-Green Bay and WiSys Technology Foundation. WiSys is leading a statewide effort to bring together UW faculty, clinical and company researchers for joint technology development and economic growth.
