World Languages Workshop achieves record participation
College Credit in High School (CCIHS) hosted an annual Professional Development Workshop at the end of August for world language educators around the state and achieved a record number of participants. The workshop, held virtually, was organized by Crystal Williams, CCIHS program specialist, and Modern Languages faculty David Coury, Cristina Ortiz and Mario Jimenez Chacon. The workshop was attended by 42 high school teachers.
The theme of this year’s workshop was “Implementing Best Practices in the World Language Classroom” and featured four engaging presentations by Kari Guerra (Grafton High School, Spanish), Audrey Vandeyacht (Green Bay Southwest High School, Spanish), Tara Torkelson (Wausau West High School, French) and Tina Halverson (Oregon High School, Spanish) with topics that included a discussion on incorporating inclusive language in the world language classroom, as well as specific strategies to deliver dynamic, communicative, student-centered world language instruction.
As part of UW-Green Bay’s Division of Continuing Education and Community Engagement, CCIHS provides dual enrollment opportunities for high school students at eligible high schools, enabling students to earn high school and college credit for the same class. High school teachers who meet UW-Green Bay faculty criteria are able to offer CCIHS courses in their high schools. Collectively, the opportunity saves Wisconsin high school students millions of dollars in tuition.
