Year in review: Video has highlights from 2011-12 at UW-Green Bay
From classroom to stage, center court to the great outdoors, it was a great year to be green at UW-Green Bay.
We saw it in record commencements, and the University’s 30,000th alum. We felt it in vibrant campus life, and took it with us in memories made to last.

It was a year of academic milestones and honors. There was another “teacher of the year.” Nursing turned 30, hit 1,000 grads and announced plans to grow again. First Nations Studies earned a major statewide award. Adult Degree continued to grow and expand, opening up new worlds for the students it serves. The Cofrin School of Business is a regional leader seeking elite accreditation, and newly revamped Graduate Programs are adding depth and breadth to the UW-Green Bay experience. Motivated in part by our top faculty and stellar pre-med programs, the Medical College of Wisconsin chose Green Bay for a satellite campus. And the University hosted a major teaching conference, demonstrating our role as a statewide leader. Our students come in strong and leave stronger, with the class of 2011 achieving a placement rate of nearly 97 percent.
“They want you to succeed here — everybody,” said Tricia Mahnke, a May 2012 UW-Green Bay graduate. “They’ll give their best effort to help you have the best college experience possible.”
UW-Green Bay’s signature Weidner Center for the Performing Arts got a fresh start during the year, thanks to a re-launch that is part of the University’s larger Strategic Plan. Excitement continues to build around a dynamic 2012-13 Performing Arts Season that includes Broadway, comedy, dance and more. The Strategic Plan also includes a critical rebranding initiative to focus energy and attention on what UW-Green Bay does best.
UW-Green Bay continues to enhance its commitment to inclusive excellence and diversity, working to make our campus a vibrant, welcoming place. We’ve also ramped up our efforts to “go green,” embracing the University’s “Eco U” roots with a host of activities and initiatives.
In 2012, students were stars. UW-Green Bay Theatre and Music scored a big hit with Cabaret, in a return to the Weidner Center mainstage, The Phoenix women’s basketball team achieved its highest-ever national ranking, cracking the Top 10 in the AP poll; and was ranked first nationally in academics with an all-time high team GPA.
A strong University relies on strong support, and two prominent alumni stepped up in a big way during the year. Businessmen Rick Chernick and Jim Wochinske’s alumni match challenge was a huge success, raising more than $142,000 to fund academic programs and student scholarships. The Chancellor’s Scholarship Dinner set a new record for attendance, showing the commitment of University and community alike to a strong UW-Green Bay.
As we look back, so too do we look ahead — to another great year to be green at UW-Green Bay.
“That’s what UW-Green Bay is about,” said 2012 graduate Amy Manske. “It’s about community, it’s about — we’re kind of one big happy family. And you may not know all the cousins’ names, but when you walk by them and you see familiar faces in the hallways, you know that they’re part of what you are, which is UW-Green Bay.”
