Daffodils abound on campus, thanks to staff efforts

The bright, yellow daffodil is the American Cancer Society’s symbol of hope in the fight against cancer. Thanks to the work of a dedicated group of volunteers, cut daffodils bloom in bunches every year at UW-Green Bay.

University staff members are hitting high gear in soliciting campus participation in the national Daffodil Days fundraiser. One of the cancer society’s signature events, it raises millions of dollars annually to support cancer research, education, advocacy and services.

The volunteers take orders for bunches and bouquets of daffodils with popular selections including $10 for a bunch of 10, and a $25 “Gift of Hope” that will anonymously deliver a vase to an area cancer patient. The cutoff to order is 4 pm. Tuesday, Feb. 17. Flowers will be delivered on campus the week of March 9.

The energy of the UW-Green Bay drive won recognition at the American Cancer Society’s Wisconsin Leadership Summit 2008. Staff member Karla Miller — the campaign coordinator here — accepted the Daffodil Days Income Improvement Award on behalf of team members Carol Brabant, Twila Marquardt, Jan Synder, Marie Stephenson, Tina Tackmier and Teri Ternes.
