Majoring in German at UW-Green Bay has been a four-year journey for Mickey. At first, she felt nervous about speaking German all the time in class, to navigating the German culture and making lifelong friends during her study abroad in Kassel, Germany. The supportive community of professors and students within the German program has made all the difference. https://www.uwgb.edu/german
Transcript: In our classes, we’re always speaking German, which was really nerve wracking at first. But as you go on, it gets better. And by the last few classes of the semester, we were reading books in German. We were talking in German all the time. Like I was immersed but transnationally. So I studied abroad in Kassel, Germany, and it was a really amazing experience. Chaotic in the best way possible. I have amazing friends who I talk to weekly now. One of the biggest things I overcame was the newness of being in a different culture and being away from family and learning how to adapt to things that aren’t familiar. What I enjoy most about the German program are the people within the program. Because the professors are so, so supportive and so willing to help you. And the people in the classes are also so understanding of your linguistic struggles. It’s just a really good community to be a part of.
