UW-Green Bay Commencement, by the numbers: Another record class for mid-year
A record 456 University of Wisconsin-Green Bay students have registered to graduate at the end of fall semester 2012 and are eligible to participate in Commencement exercises Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012.
Nearly all mid-year graduates — 453, or 99 percent — are completing undergraduate degrees, while three students (one percent) are completing master’s degrees, according to UW-Green Bay’s Office of Institutional Research and Assessment. The office also reported the following facts and figures on Thursday, Dec. 6:
— The number of mid-year undergraduate degree applicants represents an historic record for UW-Green Bay, and is up 11 percent over last year.
— Nearly two-thirds (65 percent) of undergraduate applicants are younger than 25 years old. Fourteen percent are between ages 25 and 29, and 21 percent are age 30 or older. They range in age from 20 to 62, with an average age of 27 years old.
— Two-thirds (67 percent, or 303 individuals) of the undergraduate degree candidates are women.
— Eight percent of undergraduate candidates (35 individuals) are students of color. They come from a variety of backgrounds: 15 are Asian American, six are Native American, three are Mexican or Hispanic American, one is African American and seven are from multiple racial or ethnic categories.
— Undergraduate candidates have home addresses in Brazil, China, the Netherlands, Russia and Thailand, as well as 16 different U.S. states.
— Green Bay-area high schools are well represented among undergraduate candidates, with nearly a quarter (24 percent, or 108 individuals) of students having completed high school in Brown County. Green Bay Preble High School has 19 alumni set to graduate, while Bay Port High School in Suamico has 15. Green Bay Southwest follows with 14 alumni who have registered to graduate, while Pulaski high school has 12 alumni and Green Bay West has 10.
— Two undergraduate students will complete an associate degree, while the remaining 451 will complete bachelor’s degrees. Fifty-seven bachelor’s candidates are completing double majors.
— Business Administration is the most popular major among mid-year undergraduate candidates, with 65 students set to receive degrees in that major. It is followed by Interdisciplinary Studies (51 students), Psychology (49), Human Biology (44), Human Development (44), Nursing (all tracks — 44), Education (38) and Communication (19). Art and Accounting round out the top 10 majors, with 14 and 12 applicants, respectively. Students are applying to receive undergraduate degrees in a total of 36 majors.
Mid-year Commencement will take place at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts at UW-Green Bay, 2420 Nicolet Drive. More information is available online.
