Northeast Wisconsin Technical College and UW-Green Bay work to expand transfer opportunities for students | WFRV
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – On Monday, Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) and UW-Green Bay leaders signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreement, further strengthening transfer pathways for students.
The two institutions announced that NWTC students will now be guaranteed admission into UW-Green Bay within the Human Biology, Marketing, and Psychology programs.
“We have literally mapped out exactly the classes that they’re going to take at NWTC, how many credits that is, and they get guaranteed admission to UW-Green Bay after they complete those classes,” said NWTC’s President, Kristen Raney. “Then they see exactly what they need to take at UW-Green Bay.”
According to school officials, about 50% of NWTC transfer students choose to attend UW-Green Bay, and over the past six years, more than 1,000 UW-Green Bay graduates have started at NWTC.
UW-Green Bay’s Assistant Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Services said the MOU will help students better understand what their options are and what their choices will lead to.
“We’re all in this together, for students in this community, and that’s a cool message,” said Jennifer Jones. “Students will feel that when they interact with staff and faculty at either institution.”
Now, the two institutions are looking at how transfer pathways from technical college to university have unlocked opportunities for students like Adan Cordova from Honduras, who said he would not be where he is now without his educators.
“They’re there for helping you, like if I didn’t understand something I would ask the professor,” said Cordova. “He made sure that I was able to talk with my classmate, and he gave me a little push, and then I transferred.”
Cordova graduated this May with a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology, and his next step is to continue pursuing his passion and go to medical school.
“I’m very happy to do this. It’s a unique feeling,” he said. “You can get a little stressed, but it’s worth it!”
After hoping for a better life for his family and being a first-generation college graduate, Cordova did something he never thought he could and is now on his way to becoming a medical doctor in pediatric psychiatry like he always dreamed.
