UW-Green Bay names Ryan Martin, PhD as new dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

Green Bay, Wis. – After a nationwide search, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Kate Burns announced that the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has named current Professor Ryan Martin, as dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS.)

Martin’s strong commitment to CAHSS has been evident in his role as Associate Dean for the past four years. “He embodies the collaborative and creative spirit of CAHSS and has a proven record of bringing people together within CAHSS, across the university, and in the community,” said Provost Burns. “Dean Martin’s future vision for CAHSS is compelling and I am looking forward to working with him.”

Prof. Ryan Martin has been at UW-Green Bay since 2005 after earning his PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi.  In that time, he has served as Chair of the undergraduate Psychology program, chair of the Masters program in Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology, and Associate Dean for the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

“I’m thrilled to accept this position,” said Martin. “I believe strongly in the important role the arts, humanities and social sciences will play in the future of northeastern Wisconsin.  In our work, you’ll find the solutions to social problems and the sources of cultural enrichment that our communities deeply desire.”

He has two Founders Awards from UW-Green Bay, one for Excellence in Teaching and another for Collaborative Achievement for his work on the Excellence in Psychology Instruction Conference. He researches and writes on healthy and unhealthy expressions of anger, and has two recent books on the topic including, Why We Get Mad: How to Use Your Anger for Positive Change, which explores why people become angry, some of the common consequences of anger, and how people can use their anger in productive ways. He’s given a popular TED Talk titled Why We Get Mad.

His work has been featured in the New York Times, NPR’s ‘Invisibilia’ podcast, BBC Radio’s ‘Digital Human,’ The Atlantic, and elsewhere.  He did his undergraduate work at the University St. Thomas where he studied Psychology and Criminal Justice.  He’s an avid runner who spends his time away from work coaching his one son’s soccer team and watching his other son dance.

The Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences is responsible for budget, personnel, curriculum, strategic planning and decisions, and for working with diverse constituencies to promote the University and these programs.  Dean Martin will provide academic and administrative leadership and oversight of the programs in the College, and work in a collaborative fashion with the Deans of the College of Health, Education & Social Welfare; the Austin E. Cofrin School of Business; and the College of Science and Technology on matters of mutual concerns.
