UW-Green Bay presents Czech folk song recital

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will present a guest recital of Czech folk songs on Nov. 21.

Baritone Matthew Markham and pianist Timothy Cheek will perform at UW-Green Bay’s Jean Weidner Theater in the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts. The recital presented by UW-Green Bay’s performing arts-music program will be from 4-6:30 p.m., and is free and open to the public.

Markham is an internationally celebrated vocalist, who has performed on some of the world’s most prestigious venues. He is on the voice faculty at DePauw University School of Music where he teaches applied voice and art song literature.

Cheek, who is on the faculty of the University of Michigan, is a vocal coach and leading expert on Czech vocal music. He is also an associate faculty member of the university’s Center for Russian and East European Studies.

The recital will serve as kickoff to the preliminary and semi-final rounds of the Montreal International Czech and Slovak Voice Competition that will be held here Nov. 23-24. Cheek will serve a pianist for all competition and authored the only book available on Czech diction for singers.

This is the seventh concert of the 2009-2010 season. UW-Green Bay is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
