UW-Green Bay Flute, Brass ensembles welcome guest group for April 30 concert
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Flute and Brass ensembles will welcome special guest Sounds of Silver Flute Choir for a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 30 at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts on campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive.
The UW-Green Bay Flute Ensemble, directed by Associate Lecturer Nancy Collins, will begin the program with three movements — “Stately,” “Minuetto” and “Rondo March” — of “Ceremonial Suite” by composer Kathleen Mayne. The ensemble also will perform Armando Torres Arellano’s “Aventurero,” assisted by UW-Green Bay students Mike Fowler (guitar), Ted Gloeckler (mandolin) and Kailey Mucha (flute).
Sounds of Silver, a local ensemble group of adult flutists, will take the stage next. The group will perform four pieces including “Scherzo from piano sonata, Op. 2, No. 3” by Ludwig van Beethoven, and “Marche Miniature” by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Ann Cataldo will accompany on piano.
Following a brief intermission, UW-Green Bay’s Brass Ensemble — directed by Assistant Prof. Adam Gaines — will take the stage to perform five pieces. The group will begin with “Canzon in double echo,” by Giovanni Gabrieli, which will be followed by Richard Wagner’s “Rienzi Prayer and March.” Next, the group will perform “Sonatina” (Dmitri Kabalevsky) and “Prayer,” from the opera “Hansel and Gretel” (Engelbert Humperdinck) before concluding with “Fanfare for Brass Ensemble and Percussion” (Alexander Tcherepnin).
The April 30 concert, UW-Green Bay Music’s 37th of the 2011-12 season, is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.uwgb.edu/music. UW-Green Bay is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
