Colored fire and explosive chemistry experiments highlight “Cool Chemistry” event to spark kids’ excitement about science

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 9, 2025

UW-Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus hosts the family event for kids of all ages

Green Bay, WI – On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, the UW-Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus will host “Cool Chemistry,” a free event to spark kids’ interest in the sciences. “Cool Chemistry” will take place at University Theatre on the UW-Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus, with one show for young scientists ages 3-8 years old at 4:30 p.m. and one show for BIG kids ages 9 and up at 6:30 p.m.

“Cool Chemistry” will feature educational and explosive scientific experiments, but audiences can look forward to color-changing solutions, solid foams, dry ice fog, fire and more. Experiments like the “Barking Dog” demo will surprise and delight all in attendance. Here, laughing gas is added to a long glass cylinder, followed by a few drops of a fuel. When ignited, the reaction sounds like a deep bark from a large dog! While there isn’t an official schedule of experiments, as every year is a little different, past favorites have included homemade lava lamps and glow in the dark chemistry. There is also an opportunity for kids to make their own slime following the show.

UW-Green Bay Associate Professor and “Cool Chemistry” organizer Amy Kabrhel wants “Cool Chemistry” to get kids interested in the sciences. “Science is everything from understanding fire to researching a cure to end cancer, and for kids, my mission is to get them excited and encouraged to learn more. I want them to see how much fun science is and ‘Cool Chemistry’ shows them how creative and hands-on a STEM career can be.”

Doors will open for “Cool Chemistry” 45 minutes before the show starts, and only 350 people will be admitted to each show. The show is free and open to the public. Each show will run for 45-60 minutes and families are asked to only attend one show.
