UW-Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus gets explosive with “Cool Chemistry” to get kids excited about science

Families can expect a fun and full range of chemical experiments including explosions, color-changing solutions, and more!

Green Bay, WI – On Thursday, April 25, 2024 the UW-Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus will host “Cool Chemistry,” a free event to get kids interested in the sciences. “Cool Chemistry” will take place at University Theatre on the UW-Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus, with one show for 3-8 year olds at 4:30 p.m. and one show for kids 9 and up at 6:30 p.m.

“Cool Chemistry” will feature numerous scientific experiments, but audiences can look forward to explosions, color-changing solutions, solid foams, dry ice fog, fire, and more. Experiments like “Elephant’s Toothpaste” are yearly crowd favorites. Here, a strong solution of hydrogen peroxide is mixed with dish soap and a catalyst to create a huge column of foam! While there isn’t an official schedule of experiments, as every year is a little different, some other past favorites have included homemade lava lamps and glow in the dark chemistry. There is also an opportunity for kids to make their own slime following the show.

UW-Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus Professor and “Cool Chemistry” Organizer Amy Kabrhel wants “Cool Chemistry” to get kids interested in the sciences. “I want them to see how much fun science can be. I hope that some kids get excited enough to consider a STEM career in their future.”

Doors will open for “Cool Chemistry” 45 minutes before the show starts and only 350 people will be admitted to each show. The show is free and open to the public. Each show will run for 45-60 minutes and families are asked to only attend one show.
