Chancellor Search and Screen Committee to host public listening sessions
The Chancellor Search and Screen Committee at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will host four public listening sessions to gauge campus and community input on UW-Green Bay’s next leader.
One-hour listening sessions will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28; 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29; and 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30. All sessions will be held in Phoenix Room A of the UW-Green Bay University Union. The meetings offer the chance for UW-Green Bay faculty, staff, students, alumni and administrators, as well as the general public, to weigh in on important characteristics the committee should emphasize in choosing the University’s sixth chancellor, said UW-Green Bay Prof. and Search Committee Chair Cheryl Grosso.
“Our goal is to seek as much input as possible from a diverse array of stakeholder groups, both on campus and in the community,” Grosso said. “UW-Green Bay’s next Chancellor will serve not only as the leader of this University, but also will be an important community figure. We want this process to be as open and welcoming as possible.”
Grosso added that members of the campus or larger community are invited to submit feedback and ideas in writing if they are unable to attend any of the sessions. Thoughts and suggestions can be emailed Grosso.
Harden, who has served as UW-Green Bay Chancellor since June 2009, announced in December he would be stepping back from his current role in August 2014. He and his wife Cathy plan to remain in the Green Bay area and stay active in the University, with Harden planning a return to teaching down the road. With his 65th birthday nearing and 11 grandchildren to watch grow up, Harden said the time is right to step aside. He announced his decision with the intent that his replacement be named in time for the start of the 2014-15 academic year.
Interim UW System President Richard Telfer on Jan. 22 identified the 23-member Search and Screen Committee, which consists of 12 UW-Green Bay faculty members, two academic staff members, two classified staff members and two students, as well as two administrators and three community representatives. The diverse makeup of the committee will be an asset as the group completes its work, Grosso said.
Following a national search and an intensive screening process, the committee is expected to recommend a list of candidates as finalists for consideration by the UW System President and a special Board of Regents committee, chaired by Regent Tim Higgins of Appleton. Other members of the committee include Regent Mark Bradley of Wausau, Regent Janice Mueller of Madison, and Regent Chuck Pruitt of Milwaukee.
After a series of public presentations and personal interviews, the UW System president and the Regent committee will recommend one individual to the full board, which must approve the appointment.
The campus search committee is meeting for the first time at 1 p.m. today (Friday, Jan. 24), at UW-Green Bay. At that meeting, Telfer is officially charging the committee with its mission, reviewing procedures and beginning the national search.
