Wisconsin’s 1858 law banning most abortions has been in effect since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June. But how did we get here? Why did that law stay on the books without being enforced for over 160 years? And why did 19th-century lawmakers want to restrict abortion in the first place?
