‘Soul of a Citizen’ author to keynote Common Theme kickoff
Acclaimed writer Paul Loeb will be one of the headliners for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s 2010-11 Common Theme topic, “The Leadership Question.”
Loeb’s keynote address will be Thursday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Phoenix Room of the University Union. His talk is free and open to the public.
Each year UW-Green Bay chooses a Universitywide Common Theme, which engages the campus and the community in the principles of a liberal arts education and supports the idea of an interdisciplinary educational focus.
Loeb, an associated scholar at Seattle’s Center for Ethical Leadership is the author of Soul of a Citizen: Living with Conviction in Challenging Times. His focus is understanding why some people choose to make social commitment a part of their everyday lives while others do not. Loeb’s previous books about citizen responsibility and social commitment include Hope in Hard Times and Generation at the Crossroads: Apathy and Action on the American Campus.
Loeb was instrumental in coordinating Campus Compact’s 2008 Campus Election Engagement Project, which helped colleges and universities in 15 states encourage and empower students to be involved with local and national elections.
The Sept. 30 appearance by Loeb is only the first of several by nationally known authors and activists scheduled at UW-Green Bay this fall in connection with the “Leadership Question” theme.
September 22 – Lecture by Lisa Shannon, the founder of the Run for Congo Women which benefits women who are victims of rape and mutilation in Africa.
October 14 – Lecture by Jeffrey Hou, the author of Greening Cities, Growing Communities. Hou will speak about the importance of engaging marginalized communities and citizens through community design, design activism and cross-cultural learning.
October 19 Postponed until spring – Lecture by Liz Titus Putnam, Congressional Award winner and founder of the Student Conservation Association. Putnam will speak on the significance of building the next generation of conservation leaders.
