New Music, Hand Drumming ensembles to take stage for unconventional concert

UW-Green Bay Music will present an enjoyable and unconventional concert Friday, May 10, when the University’s New Music and Hand Drumming ensembles take the stage.

This 34th concert of the 2012-13 season begins at 7:30 p.m. at the University Theatre in Theatre Hall on campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive.

The show will kick off with the New Music Ensemble, under the direction of UW-Green Bay Associate Prof. Adam Gaines. The group begins with its own “Video Collage in C Minor,” a work that grew out of the Ensemble’s explorations of Darren Soloman’s inbflat.net, an interactive piece that uses YouTube videos as a means of music creation. The Ensemble also will perform its own work, “Bottles,” developed from student Joe Russett’s idea of using bottles as a musical instrument; and “Pointillism,” composed by students Chris Eichhorst and Nick Schommer, among other pieces.

After a brief intermission, the UW-Green Bay Hand Drumming Ensemble will take the stage, under the direction of Prof. Cheryl Grosso. The Ensemble will perform several of Grosso’s own compositions, including “Rhythm Chant 1,” “Rhythm Chant GN,” “Rhythm Chant 2013Q5” and “Rhythm Chant Nu-Sam.” It also will perform “Bor Bor Bor,” traditional Ghanaian music from the West African country’s Volta Region.

Tickets for the May 10 concert are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Order online at www.uwgb.edu/tickets or by calling (920) 465-2400 or (800) 328-tkts.
