UW-Green Bay music presents instrumental ensembles, special guest May 9
UW-Green Bay Music will conclude its 2013-14 season Friday, May 9, presenting Chamber Ensembles and a special guest artist during a concert at University Theatre in Theatre Hall on campus, 2420 Nicolet Drive.
The University’s Clarinet Ensemble, Hand Drumming Ensemble and Phoenix Brass Ensemble will perform, joined by the Sounds of Silver Flute Ensemble, a local group of adult flutists. The no-cost concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
The Sounds of Silver Flute Ensemble will open the show, beginning with George Frideric Handel’s “Exultation” (arr. James “Red” McLeod) and continuing with Gioaccino Rossini’s “La Boutique Fantasque” (arr. Shaul Ben-Meir). The group will conclude with Dmitri Kabalevsky’s “The Comedians’ Gallop” (arr. Ricky Lombardo). Sounds of Silver personnel are Mona Christensen, Nancy Collins, Jean Fontaine, Kathleen Frost, Corinne Galligan, Luann Glielmi, Michelle Kuchta, Lynn Liddle-Drewiske, Kailey Mucha, Kelly Ropson, Mary Tesch, Ashley Zipperer and Sue Zipperer.
The Phoenix Brass Ensemble will be next to take the stage, under the direction of UW-Green Bay Associate Prof. Adam Gaines. The group will perform Virgil Thompson’s “Metropolitan Museum Fanfare,” Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky’s “Romance, Op. 5” (trans. Corley); Kenneth L. Griffin’s “Laughing Brass” and a Dwight Gustafson arrangement of the traditional piece “When I Can Read My Title Clear.” Phoenix Brass Ensemble personnel are: Trumpet: Amanda Cornette, Greg Koeller, Gatlin Grimm, Carl Onesti, Greg Sauve; Horn: Brandt Bailey, Molly Dederich, Jillian Patrick; Trombone: Doak Baker, Bill Burroughs, Michael Hogan; Euphonium: Cole Watkins; Tuba: Paul Dugan; Percussion: Bobby Magers, Jamie Rodgers.
After Phoenix Brass, the Clarinet Ensemble will perform, directed by Associate Prof. Eric Hansen. The group’s selections are “Minuetto and Trio from Divertimento III,” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (ed. Himie Voxman); “Andante Cantabile,” by Tchaikovsky (arr. John De Bueris); “Scherzo from Grand Trio, Op. 90” by Friedrich Kuhlau (ed Himie Voxman); and “St. Louis Blues,” by W.C. Handy (arr. Bill Holcombe). Clarinet Ensemble personnel are Heather Roberts and Kaitlynn Francois, clarinet; and Oliver Konecy, bass clarinet.
The Chamber Ensembles concert will conclude with the Hand Drumming Ensemble, directed by and playing the original compositions of UW-Green Bay Prof. Cheryl Grosso. The group will perform “Rhythm Chant Old School, ” “Rhythm Chant K” and “Rhythm Chant MM.” Hand Drumming personnel are Jason Bakeberg, Roxanne Elsner, Katie Hobbs, Bobby Joe Magers, Kailey Mucha, Jamie Rodgers, Taku Ronsman, Owin Cantable, Lisa Ford, Michaela Hogan, Candice Matuszak, Brandon Pszanka, Jacob Rogge and Jack VanBeek.
