Alumna, media executive Hollingsworth to headline March 13 ‘After Thoughts’
Hollingsworth is a 1989 UW-Green Bay Communication Processes graduate who is now president and publisher of one of America’s most influential newspapers, The Des Moines Register, in Des Moines, Iowa. She has worked at newspapers in Wisconsin, including the Green Bay Press-Gazette, as well as in Washington, Illinois and Michigan. Hollingsworth joined The Register in 2002 as vice president of advertising, and in 2005 was named general manager, directing advertising, circulation, production, marketing, information services, online and the Des Moines weeklies. In addition to her role as president and publisher of The Register, Hollingsworth now serves as Midwest Group president, U.S. Community Publishing, with Gannett Co., Inc., parent company of The Register.
In addition to her thoughts and reflections on the ever-changing world of news media, Hollingsworth will discuss the newspaper’s experience with Iowa’s first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses, which were held in early January. This pivotal political event sets the stage for the state caucuses and primaries that follow, drawing widespread media coverage from the United States and across the globe. The Register is at the heart of that coverage.
Hollingsworth has continued to give back to her alma mater through personal visits and gifts of generosity. She served as UW-Green Bay’s commencement speaker in December 2008, imploring graduates at the height of the economic recession to be bold and creative in their endeavors. In addition, Hollingsworth recently established a UW-Green Bay scholarship that will help further the University’s academic mission and make a difference in the life of a promising Communication student.
“We are just thrilled to welcome Laura back to UW-Green Bay for this campus and community event,” said Beverly Carmichael, assistant chancellor for University Advancement. “Through her time and talent, she continues to give back to this University, and we are proud to call her an alumna.”
Hollingsworth’s After Thoughts address will mark the one-year anniversary of this popular program, which began with two pilot sessions in spring 2011. Designed to connect women in the community with UW-Green Bay, After Thoughts gatherings showcase faculty, staff and guests, and convene women after their workdays for learning, enrichment and fun. The sessions provide “After Thoughts” for participants to take with them when they leave.
Each After Thoughts session takes place from 5-7 p.m. in the Grand Foyer of the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts at UW-Green Bay, 2420 Nicolet Drive. The events begin with time to network, mingle and enjoy hors d’oeuvres before the featured speaker begins. Seating is limited, so advance registration is recommended. The cost of each program is $12, and attendees are invited to register for each event individually or all four at once. To reserve your spot, send a check (payable to UW-Green Bay Foundation) to: UW-Green Bay Foundation, CL 805, 2420 Nicolet Drive, Green Bay, WI 54311. Walk-up registration also is an option. Call 920-465-2074 for more information. You can find After Thoughts on Facebook at www.facebook.com/afterthoughts.uwgb.
The March 13 event is the third After Thoughts installment of the 2011-12 academic year. UW-Green Bay Theatre Prof. Laura Riddle will offer the final program of 2011-12, titled “Cabaret: Berlin to Broadway,” on Tuesday, April 10. UW-Green Bay Theatre and Music will present Cabaret April 20 and 21 on the Cofrin Family (main) Stage at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts. It will be Theatre’s first production on the mainstage in more than a decade.
