Time to Trust and Turn the Page
And just like that, the tassels and the page turn, beginning the next chapter for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Class of 2024. Graduating Class Speaker Mia Laufer ’24, an Oshkosh native graduating with a degree in Human Resources, reminded her classmates, family and friends to “trust the next chapter, you know the author” as she reflected on the lessons and deep friendships she gained during her time at the university.
Laufer spoke during the afternoon ceremony of the 110th Commencement Ceremony of the university on Saturday, December 14, 2024. You can read her full speech below:
“Good Afternoon, distinguished faculty, proud families, honored guests, and most importantly, the graduating class of 2024.
Today, we stand together on the brink of a new chapter—a moment we’ve envisioned countless times but perhaps never fully imagined would arrive.
This day is a testament to hard work, resilience, and the unwavering support of those around us. I’d like to take a moment to thank our professors, mentors, families, and friends who have been with us every step of the way.
My time at UWGB has been truly transformative, providing me with far more than academic knowledge alone. I’ve had incredible opportunities to grow as a leader, serving as the president of the Society for Human Resource Management and Vice President of the Student Association of Management. These roles taught me the importance of collaboration, effective communication, and leadership. They challenged me to think strategically, manage different perspectives, and inspire others to work toward shared goals—skills that I will carry with me into my professional and personal life.
Another integral part of my college experience was working for Good Times Programming, supervised by Adam Novotny. Starting as the cultures and communities event programmer my freshman year, I learned to plan events that celebrated diversity and inclusivity. By my sophomore year, I was promoted to general manager, which challenged me to grow as a leader, work collaboratively, and balance responsibilities. These experiences, along with Adam’s guidance, shaped my confidence, adaptability, and passion for community building.
Each of these roles and opportunities has shaped me into a more well-rounded individual, ready to tackle challenges and thrive beyond graduation.
My journey at UWGB has also transformed my personal life, bringing amazing people into my world who have left a lasting impact. During my freshman year, on the outdoor volleyball courts, I met a guy named Lukas. Little did I know that day would become one of the most significant moments in my life. Fast forward to today, we’ve celebrated three wonderful years together. Lukas has been my rock through the ups and downs of college, always cheering me on and encouraging me to chase my goals.
I’ve had the privilege of meeting my best friends, Olivia and Bryssa, who have been by my side every step of the way. From late-night ‘study’ sessions—if you can count watching Switched at Birth until midnight as studying—to spontaneous adventures and unwavering support during tough times, these friendships have been the cornerstone of my college experience. Together, we’ve created unforgettable memories: like dog-sitting an elderly dog named Bob, a few dozen wine nights, waiting hours just to play—and lose—at bingo, and celebrating our 21st birthdays, only to get in trouble for being too loud while I was the building RA. Olivia and Bryssa have made UWGB feel like home and have shown me the true value of surrounding yourself with people who uplift, inspire, and bring joy into your life.
I also want to thank my mom and dad for their endless love and support throughout this journey. Mom, you single-handedly raised me and my three siblings, showing us every day what strength and resilience looks like. Your belief in me has been my foundation, and I wouldn’t be here without your sacrifices and unconditional love.
To my dad, thank you for stepping into my life and becoming such a steady, supportive presence. When our families came together, you helped create a loving, blended home, and now I’m lucky to say I have six amazing siblings. Together, you both have shown me what it means to lead with love, compassion, and selflessness and for that, I am forever grateful.
As I reflect on this journey, I am reminded of the strength and support that have shaped me—not only from my family but also from the lessons and experiences we’ve shared during our time here.
As we turn the page, remember the words, ‘I trust the next chapter because I know the author.’ We are the authors of our own stories, and together, we’ve proven that we are capable of perseverance, growth, and greatness. Let’s step boldly into the future, ready to write chapters filled with purpose, passion, and impact.
The chapters ahead may be uncertain, but they are also full of possibilities. Today marks not just an end but a beginning.
Congratulations, Class of 2024! The future is ours to shape—let’s go make it extraordinary!”
