UW-Green Bay’s Cofrin School of Business ‘Transcripts to Resumes’ program receives INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine’s 2023 Inspiring Programs in Business award
Magazine gives national recognition of programs that are making a difference for all underrepresented groups in the business field
Green Bay, Wis.— The Cofrin School of Business (CSB) has received the 2023 Inspiring Programs in Business Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education. The Inspiring Programs in Business Award honors colleges and universities that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the field of business. UW-Green Bay Cofrin School of Business’ “Transcripts to Resumes” program will be featured, along with 21 other recipients, in the April 2023 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
The Cofrin School of Business’ ’Transcripts to Resumes’ program is one of several programs whose goal is to provide high impact experiences to all students, but particularly first generation and underrepresented learners. The purpose of ‘Transcripts to Resumes’ is to transition the educational process from a traditional focus on content (i.e., transcripts), to a modern focus on accumulated relevant experiences (i.e., resumes). In doing so the CSB seeks to build community to increase learner retention, degree completion, and professional success.
“We are honored to receive this award from INSIGHT Into Diversity,” said Cofrin School of Business Dean Mathew Dornbush. “While there is still much work to be done to further assist all learners, and especially those who are first generation and from underrepresented groups, we believe our ‘Transcripts to Resumes’ program, along with its component parts such as The Mentoring Project, the Phoenix Leadership Program, peer-to-peer financial wellness counseling, our student managed investment fund, and the many other experiential learning programs we offer are transforming the business education we provide and expanding opportunities for all students within our rapidly diversifying region.”
Inspiring Programs in Business Award winners were selected by INSIGHT Into Diversity based on efforts to inspire and encourage a new generation of young people to consider careers in business through mentoring, teaching, research, and successful programs and initiatives.
Initital results of the program are exceptional. According to the Cofrin School of Business’ Spring 2022 annual student success survey, 78% of student respondents rated their interactions with their CSB professional advisors as good or excellent, up 15 percentage points from the previous year. Since Fall 2016, declared degree seekers within the CSB have increased from 1,178 to 1,649. During this same period the underrepresented student body increased from 12% to of 22% of total learners, while the white student body increased in absolute terms by almost 24%. The CSB continues to support a learner population that is roughly 53% first generation, roughly 28% Pell eligible, and 32% older than 25 years of age.
“The impact that faculty, staff and students at UW-Green Bay have within our communities is outstanding,” said UW-Green Bay Chancellor Michael Alexander. “Programs like ‘Transcripts to Resumes’ and the CSB’s Mentoring Project will provide a workforce equipped to rise within our region. All students can learn and should have the opportunity to attend an institution that is investing in their ability to develop their education in a way that inspires social mobility and a commitment to serve our communities in a positive way.”
“We know that many business programs are not always recognized for their success, dedication, and mentorship for underrepresented students,” says Lenore Pearlstein, owner and publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “We want to honor the schools and organizations that have created programs that inspire and encourage young people who may currently be in or are interested in a future career in business. We are proud to honor these programs as role models to other institutions of higher education and beyond.”
