Press-Gazette editorial: Study rehired retirees policy before changes are made
The Green Bay Press-Gazette editorial board on Thursday (Oct. 27) called for a thorough review of the state’s policy for rehiring retirees, saying a study is needed before any changes are made. The state should examine how extensive the practice is and determine its impact on taxpayers, the editorial says, along with examining the policy’s impact on education, law enforcement and other sectors. The editorial comes on the heels of Gov. Scott Walker’s announcement Friday (Oct. 21) that he supports a proposal to curb the practice of rehiring retirees in the state. Also on Friday, UW System President Kevin Reilly sent a letter to state Department of Employee Trust Funds Secretary David Stella, in which he called for clarification on and voiced support for a broad review of the practice.
