The event will have municipal staff using crosswalks with officers monitoring traffic. Vehicles will be stopped for failing to follow the law of yielding to pedestrians in the crosswalk and will result in warnings and/or tickets at the officer’s discretion. The state statute is 346.24 (1).
Law enforcement partners include Ashwaubenon Public Safety, Brown County Sheriff’s Office, De Pere Police, Green Bay Police, Hobart-Lawrence Police, Pulaski Police, and new to the final event will be UW-Green Bay University Police.
The first two Crosswalk Education and Enforcement events of the year, held June 27th and August 22nd, resulted in a combined 199 warnings issued and 1,472 vehicles correctly yielding to pedestrians for an 88% compliance rate across the two events.
“We typically see a higher compliance rate with the third event,” said Mario Gonzalez, strategic marketing and communications manager for Wello. “By now we’ve had students in school for several weeks, so I think people are used to seeing a lot more foot traffic again.”
October is also national pedestrian safety month.
