Board of Regents approves tuition hike; UWGB opts out of additional 1% increase | WBAY

MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) – The Universities of Wisconsin board of regents approved a roughly 5% increase in tuition in for the upcoming academic year. That means students will have to pay hundreds of dollars more than last year.

Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman proposed a 4% increase at all state universities. He gave them the option of an additional one-percent increase, raising tuition by 5%.

But while tuition goes up for every university student, in Green Bay it will go up a little less.

Every school except University of Wisconsin-Green Bay adopted the optional 1% increase. UWGB said it opted out because a vast majority of their students are on financial aid and want to keep tuition low for them.

This is the third year in a row the universities will increase tuition after a 10-year freeze.

Dr. Ashok Rai says the regents need to be aware of the impact.

“I think it’s important, number one, that the committee and all of us as regents take the tuition increase very seriously, understand the impact on students and families in Wisconsin,” said Dr. Ashok Rai, Regent of Universities of Wisconsin.

Last year’s tuition increase was just under four percent.
