Sheboygan Public Invited to National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council Meeting | 1330 & 101.5 WHBL

Those interested in the National Marine Sanctuary just offshore of Sheboygan are invited to listen, learn, and offer input during an upcoming meeting.  The Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council brings members of the local community together to provide advice to NOAA, the managing agency, and help guide sanctuary management.  The 962-square-mile sanctuary houses 36 historic shipwreck sites representing vessels that played a central role in building the nation between the 1830s and 1930s.  A high concentration of those rest offshore of Sheboygan.  Some 59 more potential shipwrecks await confirmation within the boundaries.

Meetings of the advisory council are held every other month in either Port Washington, Two Rivers, Manitowoc or in Sheboygan which hosts the upcoming meeting this Thursday at 6 p.m. in City Hall.

The meeting will feature discussion by the 15-member council that’s comprised of divers, historians, educators, tourism and marketing leaders, as well fishing, economic development, recreation and maritime interests.  Members John Janssen of the UWM School of Freshwater Sciences and Chris Houghton of UW-Green Bay will provide updates on current projects happening along the coast, and public comment will be taken beginning around 7:50 p.m.
