Alumnus, retired professor featured in Press-Gazette story on understanding Islam
A 2011 alumnus is working to inform the Green Bay area about Islam, part of a series of open house events aimed at clearing up misconceptions and strengthening community ties. Imam Mohamed Zakarya, a cum laude December 2011 Human Biology grad, is one of the leaders of the Green Bay mosque of the Islamic Society of Wisconsin. Saturday (April 20), he and fellow Muslims welcomed participants — including retired UW-Green Bay Prof. Peter Kellogg — for just such a session at the mosque, located on Velp Ave. Both Zakarya and Kellogg are quoted in a Green Bay Press-Gazette story that ran Sunday (April 21), outlining the event. Islam is about submission to God, and about peace, Zakarya said. “It encompasses everything in life,” he said. “It is a way of life.” Full story.
