UWGB Funding Woes Affecting Sheboygan Library Operations, Course Offerings | 1330 & 101.5 WHBL

Budgetary and enrollment issues have University of Wisconsin campuses adjusting spending and staffing, and that’s affecting operations in Sheboygan.

Those struggles statewide drew comments from Governor Tony Evers on Friday, throwing blame onto Republican lawmakers whom he said “have spent more than a decade waging war on public education in Wisconsin, including our UW System and higher education institutions, and have consistently refused to make the necessary, meaningful investments our state and our campuses desperately need to compete and that our students deserve.”

Funding strains within UW-Green Bay’s budget recently prompted the announcement of the layoffs of nine staff members, affecting library services at their Manitowoc, Marinette, and Sheboygan campuses, as well as a program aimed at helping high schoolers earn college credits.  More recently, UW-Green Bay also announced they are considering discontinuing majors in economics, environmental policy and planning, and the arts, as well as minors in international environmental studies, geography, and physics.

In addressing UW issues on Friday, Governor Evers said in his new budget he will be asking the legislature to step up in order to provide Wisconsinites with “…a UW System that is fully funded, fully functioning, and that meets the needs of our students, our workforce, and our local communities.”
