In celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, the Sheboygan County Museum’s annual speaker series will explore the diverse stories that define what “home” means in the United States. This year’s theme, Our American Home, brings together scholars and community leaders to share perspectives on immigration, citizenship, and cultural identity.
UW-Green Bay’s own Professor Alise Coen, Political Science, will present “Legacies of Refuge in America” on Tuesday, April 7, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Dr. Coen will examine how global perceptions of America as a safe haven have shaped refugee and immigration policies—and how those policies have impacted communities from the Middle East, Central America, Afghanistan, Ukraine and beyond.
The series runs February through May and includes topics ranging from Black citizenship and Dutch immigration to the Hmong diaspora. Each talk offers a chance to learn, reflect and engage with stories that continue to shape our communities.
