Staudinger offers context for story on Roe v. Wade anniversary
Democracy and Justice Studies instructor Alison Staudinger offered some insight into the four decades that have passed since the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, talking to the Green Bay Press-Gazette’s Maria Amante for a story that ran in Tuesday’s (Jan. 22) newspaper. The ruling on Jan. 22, 1973 has set the tone for a broader discussion for the generation that has grown up with the ruling as status quo, Staudinger said. “It’s important as part of a broader set of concerns for feminists and people who are maybe concerned about abortion rights,” she said. “It’s less and less common that you know someone who has had an illegal abortion and suffered from it. … There’s less of an urgency to protect abortion rights.” Fewer people today have seen abortion associated with risk, Staudinger said, meaning it is perceived as a right needing less protection.
