Date, theme set for 18th annual Faculty Development Conference
The 18th annual Faculty Development Conference will be held January 24, 2014 in the University Union. This year’s theme is “Assessment as a Tool for Change.” The keynote address, “Assessment in Higher Education: Useful, Sensible, Feasible, and Acceptable to Accreditors,” will be delivered by Dr. Barbara E. Walvoord, professor emerita of the University of Notre Dame. Walvoord has consulted and led workshops at more than 400 institutions of higher education nationwide on topics of assessment; teaching and learning; and writing across the curriculum. She has published an extensive collection of books and articles on learning and assessment including the book Assessment Clear and Simple: A Practical Guide for Institutions, Departments, and General Education. In her UW-Green Bay session, she will summarize the current state of assessment nationally including its promise and dangers. She will describe what higher education institutions need to do and ways to make the process sensible and useful. She will present a basic, no-frills assessment plan for departments and general education with an emphasis on using the assessment data for action that enhances student learning.
