Heirloom sale, Medland featured in ‘Press-Gazette’
The UW-Green Bay Heirloom Plant Sale, along with our own Vicki Medland, got some nice ink in Saturday’s (May 11) Press-Gazette, with a story and photo previewing Saturday’s (May 18) annual event. The feature talks about some of the 7,200 plants that will be available during this year’s NAS sale, including heirloom varieties featuring such fun names as “Chocolate Beauty,” Lipstick,” “Green Zebra” and “Mortgage Lifter.” Medland, associate director of the Cofrin Center for Biodiversity, explained the heirlooms’ appeal. “The reason they’re so much better in so many ways is they were selected by people for their home gardens. They were selected for color and flavor,” she said. “I think it’s about the uniqueness of the plants for people who want to grow something different.” You can hear more from Medland — and read about some seriously mouth-watering veggies — click here.
And Tuesday, with four live segments on “Good Day Wisconsin”
That’s right, Fox 11’s “Good Day Wisconsin” will be live on campus Tuesday, with four morning segments featuring all things Heirloom Plant Sale. Early risers can catch the first segment at (approximately) 5:45 a.m., with additional spots to air around 6:45, 7:15 and 8:15 a.m. “GDW”’s Emily Deem will talk with Medland and others about the sale’s history, success and benefits — and, rumor has it, will sample some of NAS Associate Prof. Steve Meyer’s famous fresh salsa (we’ve had it; the stuff is good). So tune in, or check the link below on Tuesday — segments are added online throughout the morning.
