First Nations Studies, LGBTQ Health Fair to screen ‘Two Spirits’

Please join First Nations Studies at the LGBTQ Health Fair for a screening of the film Two Spirits, 1 to 4 p.m. this Saturday (March 9) in the Union’s 1965 Room. The 2009 film explores the cultural context behind a tragic and senseless murder. Fred Martinez was a Navajo youth slain at the age of 16 by a man who bragged to his friends that he “bug-smashed a fag.” Martinez had been part of an honored Navajo tradition — the ‘nadleeh’, or ‘two-spirit’, who possesses a balance of masculine and feminine traits. Through telling Fred’s story, the film is described as a reminder of the values that America’s indigenous peoples have long embraced. Following the film, Thomas Lee Eades (Ho Chunk Nation), of Native American Student Services at UW Oshkosh, will facilitate a discussion with the audience.
