Handel’s 'Messiah' returns to Weidner Center stage
The music and setting will be traditional — George Frederic Handel’s Messiah at UW-Green Bay’s Weidner Center for the Performing Arts — but the time and featured performers will be special.
The UW-Green Bay Chorale, Green Bay Symphony Choir and Festival Orchestra will perform Handel’s holiday favorite at 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 6, under the direction of Randall Meder, UW-Green Bay director of choral activities.
“We wanted this concert to take place in the afternoon instead of the evening to make it more family friendly during a busy holiday season,” said Meder.
Notable in this year’s performance is the array of soloists involved, which will include new UW-Green Bay faculty member, Courtney Sherman, soprano, and Wisconsin native Gerrod Pagenkopf, countertenor.
“We are very excited to have Dr. Sherman on our faculty. Her lyric soprano brings a special quality to this performance and her dynamic teaching makes her a great asset to the students at UW-Green Bay,” said Meder.
Pagenkopf, a graduate of Gillett High School and UW-Madison alumnus, has become a sought-after soloist for baroque opera and oratorio, and will perform “But who may abide the day of his coming” and “O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion.”
Other soloists will be Sarah Meredith Livingston of the UW-Green Bay faculty and Erik Gustafson, tenor, of Phoenix, Ariz.
