Smithsonian honors Maria Hinton

The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian has presented its first NMAI Prism Award to Maria Hinton, a teacher and tribal elder of the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin and 1979 UW-Green Bay graduate. Hinton, 99, was recognized for her work as an educator who has devoted more than 40 years to the preservation of the Oneida language. That includes a digitized searchable online database that includes more than 34,000 words, including 900 sound files of pronunciation.
