In the news: Zapf weighs in for story on kids and guns  

Human Development Prof. Jennifer Zapf was among the experts weighing in for a Monday (July 9) Green Bay Press-Gazette story on how young is too young for kids to learn about and handle firearms. The piece takes a look at the Family Shooting Academy, a local public shooting range that plans to offer a family gun safety course to children in kindergarten through grade four. Zapf talks about the importance of drawing the line between reality and fantasy when it comes to guns, which is increasingly important at a time when guns are prevalent in video game play. “Recognizing that distinction between it’s real, this can do real damage, versus this is just a plaything, I think that line is hard for kids to draw,” Zapf said. “So that’s where the instruction becomes so important and the availability of what they have becomes really important.” Full story.
